In a very tragic turn of events that exemplifies the rising wave of hatred towards immigrants that’s spreading in USA following the election of Donald Trump as the President, a 32 year old Indian techie, Srinivas Kuchibhotla, was killed in a pub in Kansas by an ex-military man on February 22. There was no other intention behind the murder, except that it was a hate crime triggered by a small scuffle. Though the culprit had been apprehended, the damage has been done and we have lost one of our kin.
Sunayna Dumala, the wife of the slain engineer, wrote a heart wrenching post on her Facebook timeline, that has been shared by nearly everyone. In the post, she described about the dreadful incident that has changed her life forever. She started off her post by this, “This is my first official blog post on Facebook, and it is with a heavy heart that I am writing these words. On the dreadful night of Wednesday February 22nd 2017, I lost my husband — my soul mate — my friend and my confidante. He was a source of inspiration, a support system not just to me but to any and all he got to know. He always had a smile for every one, respected all especially his elders.”
She went on to describe how they met, how their married life was, and how life took a tragic turn when a man thought a different race was reason enough to kill another. She went on to thank people who supported her in the trying times. Towards, the end of the post, she mentioned how both of them were fans of Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan, and how they should help her spread the message of love. “Mr. Amitabh Bachchan sir, there wasn’t a party that ended without us dancing to your songs. Our friends used to fondly call us Amitabh and Jaya because my husband is 6’2’’ and I am 5 feet. My husband used to say that our kids should be as tall as Abhishek and Shweta. Shah Rukh Khan sir, he was a huge fan of yours, and he made sure we watched your latest movie, Raees. I need all your support to pass this strong message of spreading love and giving confidence to every foreign national that their fight will be listened to.”
She ended the post with this message, “I will now ask same question — On what basis we decide a person is good or bad, and of course, it’s not based on the color of your skin. So what decides that? Many times, these issues are talked about for a few weeks and people tend to forget about them afterward, but the fight must go on towards eradicating hatred from the minds of people. So what is the government going to do to stop hate crime? Lastly, to answer the question that is in every immigrant’s mind, DO WE BELONG HERE? Is this the same country we dreamed of and is it still secure to raise our families and children here?”
Here’s her entire post, which anyone with a heart should read…
In these turbulent times, the celebs and commoners should join hands to spread awareness and stop letting wily politicians manipulate us and prevent more casualties like Srinivas. It doesn’t matter if it’s USA, Pakistan or India – hatred is the real common enemy.
