It’s a quite a pain in the a** these days to get your children admitted in a good school, with the high donations and how they interview parents to evaluate the kid. The latter part is really troublesome, because the whole idea is quite silly but it is still being practices at many schools. Not every parent is schooled in English medium, in a country whose national language is supposed to be Hindi. Having studied in a government school myself, I find it very strange of parents’ insistence these days to make sure their kids only go to Catholic schools and that they only speak English. So I could quite relate to the happening shown in the trailer of Hindi Medium, a satire starring Irrfan Khan and Pakistani actress Saba Qamar. Hindi Medium is directed by Saket Chaudhary, who previously made Pyar Ke Side Effects and Shaadi Ke Side Effects, and produced by Dinesh Vijan.

The trailer starts off on a hilarious note where a foreigner teachers Irrfan and Saba, who play parents to a young girl, on how to describe their daughter in English. Impressed by the way he waxed eloquently about their kid, Irrfan claps and says he can’t even believe he was talking about their kid. The trailer then moves on to show the difficulties of the parents to get their daughter admitted to a good English medium school, as they themselves were never schooled in one. So they feel that their daughter will have difficulty in her life ahead if she is not fluent in English. The scenes where the daughter plays in a carefree manner with her friends, as her parents struggle to get into one school after another, is just how life is for us, commoners. When no options works out, they even decide to get rid of their possessions to get their daughter admitted through gareeb quota.

Irrfan Khan shines well when he is in sardonic mode, but Saba Qamar impressed me by being a perfect foil to Irrfan’s antics. She had made news when she dissed Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan, and all on a Pakistani show, so hoping her performance here, more than the apology she later gave, compensate for that. Also watch out Deepak Dobriyal’s cameo in the trailer, which is given below…
