One of the major releases of April is the period drama, Begum Jaan. The movie has piqued our interest with its ensemble cast, an intriguing plot and an interesting, hardhitting trailer. Vidya Balan spearheads the cast, which has some very interesting actors in the roll call. Among the ladies, there is Gauhar Khan, Pallavi Sharda, Ila Arun, Pallavi Sharda, Flora Saini and a few newcomers. Among the men, there are Rajit Kapur, Chunky Pandey, Ashish Vidhyarthi, Pitobash, Vivek Mushran and Naseeruddin Shah. Begum Jaan is directed by Srijit Mukherji, who also directed the original Bengali movie, Rajkahini.

If you have seen the trailer, you know that the movie is set in 1947, the year India got its independence and also got separated from Pakistan, and is about a brothel in rural Punjab who falls victim when both the countries are in the process of drawing their boundaries. Vidya Balan plays the brothel madam who refuses the vacate the house and decides to give it back to the administrators, when they use foul means to get them evicted. She inspires her girls to fight back, leading to some very inspiring but tragic consequences.

In the making video of the movie that the makers have released, Vidya Balan and a couple of cast members, including Gauhar Khan, talk about how they made Begum Jaan into an inspiring leader. As they reveal, she is like a mother, an elder sister and protector to the girls. Vidya Balan also talks about how a woman’s body is her right, no matter what profession she is, and she has the right to decide how to use it.
