Well this is quite exciting news. Actor/director Mel Gibson who was blacklisted by Hollywood after being arrested for drunk driving and making anti-Semitic comments, has made a grand comeback. After being nominated for an Oscar for his directorial Hacksaw Ridge, now it is being reported that he may next enter into a superhero arena, not as an actor but a director.
Mel Gibson is being courted by production house Warner Bros to direct the sequel to the film Suicide Squad. Suicide Squad was helmed by David Ayer. According to sources, Gibson is familiarising himself with the material. But the studio is also looking at other directors, Daniel Espinosa among them.
The Ayer directorial, which released last year, featured actors like Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto. Speaking at a screening of Hacksaw Ridge, Gibson confirmed talks were underway with the studio. “So is this getting close to a deal or is it a first date?,” the director was asked, to which he replied: “It’s kind of a first date.”
If one remembers correctly, Gibson recently called Warner Bros. other 2016 superhero film Batman v Superman “a piece of sh*t,” adding: “I’m not interested in the stuff. Do you know what the difference between real superheroes and comic book superheroes is? Real superheroes didn’t wear spandex.”
Wonder what made him change his mind.
Well Hacksaw Ridge has indeed turned out to be a turning point in his career, according to The Hollywood Reporter, he now finds himself fielding a slew of offers, both from studios and indies. He is in talks to join Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg for Paramount’s Daddy’s Home 2, and is reteaming with Hacksaw Ridge actor Vince Vaughn for gritty crime indie Dragged Across Concrete.
