Last week, peaceful protests were held in Tamil Nadu against the ban on Jallikattu. Millions assembled on Marina Beach to voice their support for the sport, that is symbolic of Tamil culture and tradition. Fasts were held, placards were displayed, only peaceful ways were resorted to, just so that the ban on this sport would be lifted. Unfortunately, the peaceful protests took a violent turn this morning when a police station was set ablaze by a group of protesters as the police forcibly tried to get the protesters off Marina Beach. Vehicles were also set on fire.

Police actually had to resort to Baton charge and tear gas treatment to disperse off the protesters. DMK working Stalin criticised the police’s way of handling situation and demanded a permanent solution. “It is condemnable that instead of holding talks with peaceful protesters, it has been attempted to end protests using police with an authoritarian mindset,” stated Stalin.

Kamal Haasan had requested the students not to resort to violent means. RJ Balaji requested protesters  to go home, as the fact that the government issued an ordinance was a victory in itself. Instead of celebrating, they were resorting to violent ways. And now Rajinikanth has written a letter, urging the protesters to maintain Peace. He is deeply saddened by the situation in Tamil Nadu, currently. Thalaiva is proud of the youngsters and their peaceful ways and requests them to stop now.

Last week everyone from kollywood – right from Rajinikanth to Kamal Haasan, Suriya, Karthi, Vishal, Trisha, Sivakumar to Dhanush, Jayam Ravi, Sivakarthikeyan, Simbu, observed a day fast as part of Nadigar Sangam ( South Indian Artists Association) in support of Jallikattu. Even Mahesh Babu, Pawna Klayan, Rana Daggubati voiced their support for the sport.
