While his domestic box office performance is just a shadow of what it used to be a couple of years back, Shah Rukh Khan’s magnetic pull overseas is something no one can take away from him. His first movie of 2017, Raees, was a decent earner at the domestic box office, though not in the league of his closes competitors’ movie performances, like say Salman Khan’s Sultan and Aamir Khan’s Dangal. However, Raees turned out to have a better fate in North American box office, that includes USA and Canada.
As per a box office report in IndieWire, they have made a list of indie, foreign flicks that include Bollywood movies that get limited release, and documentary, that get limited release in the theatres there in 2017. That means any movie that gets 599 screens and under. As per the list, Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees has the second highest collection in North American box office with the collections of $3,262,954 from 265 screens with an average of $6,768 per screen. Raees was beaten to the top position by a Mongolian film called I Am Not Your Negro, that earned $5,553,769.
In the same list only two other Bollywood movies find a place – Akshay Kumar’s Jolly LLB 2 and surprise, surprise Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur’s OK Jaanu. Jolly LLB 2 gets 8th position in the list with gross collections of $1,654,254 from 173 screens with an average of $4,476 per screen. OK Jaane, co-produced by Karan Johar, may have failed miserably in India but it still managed to get 16th position with gross collections of $355,922 from 121 screens. It is preceded by Jackie Chan and Disha Patani’s Kung Fu Yoga at 15th position. Y
Shah Rukh Khan will be seen next in Rehnuma, that is directed by Imtiaz Ali and also stars Anushka Sharma. The movie is scheduled to release on Independence Day weekend.
